Do I Need to Upgrade My Electrical Panel?

Replacing and updating electrical work in your residential or commercial property.

Pittsburgh’s housing market is filled with a mixture of old and new homes. Newer housing plans continue to expand passed the city limits and older neighborhoods are seeing a resurgence of urban living. With all-things-DIY trending now more than ever, it’s important to set some home renovation boundaries. While you might consider replacing a few outlets around your house, trying to replace an old fuse box or upgrading your existing electrical panel poses an entirely different set of rules.

Pittsburgh’s own Peters Electric commends today’s DIY’er for wanting to tackle renovation projects alone, but if you’re experiencing the following electrical issues, be sure to call Peter’s Electric before trying to upgrade your electric panel box.

Do you still rely on a fuse box?

Homes built before 1960 relied on a fuse box. When a fuse burns out, you have to physically replace it. However, you can conveniently switch to reset a blown fuse with a modern-day electric panel box and circuit breakers. If you are looking to buy or recently purchased a property built before 1960, be sure it has an updated electrical box with circuit breakers. If not, hire an electrician to replace it.

Is your home over the age of 20?
We ask you to consider this because even though electrical panels last 25-40 years, houses older than 20 to 30 years may need an upgrade in their amp-service. Homes built in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s have panel boxes that only provide 60-100 amps. Technological advances in appliances, televisions and smart-home automation requires more output. Today’s homes are built with 200-amp panels, at the least.

Do your breakers trip often?

We’ve all been there. You start your oven, pop something in the microwave and put a pot of coffee on and in an instant, the breaker trips in your kitchen. If you notice breakers tripping around the house when you try to use multiple appliances and devices at the same time, it sounds like your panel box has reached full-capacity. While a skilled electrician can diagnose any other issues, you might just have to add more electricity to handle the increased use of electrical power.

Completing an appliance overhaul or adding-on to your home?

If you’re planning on renovating your kitchen, or any other parts of your home, know that adding high-tech appliances or smart-home automation should require a once-over by an electrician. This also applies if you’re adding on to your home. Adding anything new or additional to your home may require more electricity output.

Lights dimming and flickering frequently?

We know it’s that spooky time of year, but before you start blaming your flickering lights on ghosts, call Peters Electric for a FREE consultation! Dimming lights can be a sign your panel box needs serviced or upgraded.

If you’re going to undertake any home renovations, it’s best to contact a reputable electrician first! Call Peters Electric at 412-854-5800!
